Adaptogens - What Are They And What Do They Do?

The term adaptogen is used in botanical medicine to refer to herbs that are reported to increase the bodys' resistance to stress, trauma, anxiety, and fatigue.  The concept of adaptogens dates back thousands of years to ancient India and China, but modern research did not begin until the late 1940's.  In 1947 Nikolai Lazarev defined an adaptogen as an agent that allows the body to counter adverse physical, chemical, or biological stressors by raising nonspecific resistance toward such stress, thus allowing the organism to 'adapt" to the stressful circumstances.

Herbal medicine claims that adaptogenic herbs are distinct  from other substances in their ability to balance endocrine hormones and the immune system.  They help the body achieve optimal homeostasis.  Adaptogens have a normalizing effect on the body and are capable of either toning down the activity of hyperfunctioning systems or strengthening the activity of underactive systems.

The use of herbs as adaptogens can be traced as far back as the Vedic Sanskrit period of ancient India.  From this ancient language comes the Vedas,  which Ayurveda, (an ancient Indian medical science) was based.  Many adaptogenic herbs were documented to be rejuvenating, increase vitality and energy and also promote longevity in these ancient writings.  Amalaki is one of the oldest  adaptogenic herbs recorded in early Ayurveda.  Ayurvedic formulations often combined amalaki with other syngeric herbs to help bolster the potency of the amalaki.  One present day company that seems to have captured the ancient wisdom of amalaki is Zrii.  They have formulated a liquid nutritional that combines amalaki with six other herbs, three of which are adaptogens.  It is important to note  there are only 21 known adaptogens.

Supplementation with adaptogenic herbs are a great way to improve your health. They are non-toxic, and mostly side-effect-free. The new Chopra Center endorsed Amalaki nutritional beverage is a great place to start. The Zrii company has mixed amalaki with six other botanticals, two which are also adaptogens. It's getting rave reviews from health professionals.
